Welcome to Trayde's Brand Spotlight series. Here we take the time to appreciate the wonderful members on our platform. We have created this section to share inspiring stories about brands, their products and their meaningful purpose.
In honour of The International Women's Day 2021, we have prepared a blog series featuring some of our women-owned brands that have an inspiring story to share with us.
I have a great group of really amazing women around me, all working hard and killing their own businesses. Seeing their achievements, enjoying their success and getting to work (and play) alongside them is really inspiring!
Today, we are highlighting one of our members Abbi, founder of Rex+Fox. Abbi, who's background lies in childcare and education, was craving an outlet that could fit in around her kids. Having no prior experience in design, Abbi had to teach herself everything from scratch. Her prints embrace feminism and women empowerment and what inspires her most is when others can look up to her prints and feel motivated.
Please tell us a little about yourself and your background.
Hi, I'm Abbi! I have two young children and a fabulous husband! I love chocolate, Miley Cyrus, Disco and Ru Pauls Drag Race! We own a classic 1973 VW Campervan and another little joint business offering affordable product photography! My background is actually in childcare and education, none of which are doable at home around family life!
What inspired you to create your business?
I lost my way after having my children and really wanted to do something that was for me; my brain was frazzled and I was craving an outlet that I could fit in around the kids! Enter Rex + Fox - the middle names of both of my mini people!
What are some of the products you have created/developed that are closest to your heart? Please share them with us!
My favourite products are my feminist prints - I actually commissioned these by the most amazing graphic designer who I waffled on to and he just produced everything I had envisioned. From there I've started to gain confidence and I've dabbled in designing my own prints; I love anything powerful, bright and colourful and feel like my prints really reflect that!
Were there any challenges you faced and how did you tackle them?
I am not a designer in any way, I've had to teach myself everything from scratch and I've really struggled to get my vision down on paper with my limited skills. The best thing I did was seek out professional help where I was really able to channel my ideas into physical prints. There are so many people out there who are willing to help you if you ask. It was daunting entering a world where there are so many talented, creative people and i'm still learning and finding my feet but I am loving the journey!
What have been some of the proudest moments for you as an entrepreneur?
Probably making that first ever sale and every single sale thereon after. It really makes all the hours of work worthwhile and knowing that someone is looking up at your print everyday and is feeling inspired or motivated or empowered is just great!
Are there any women that have inspired you, and if so, who?
Yes, absolutely. I have a great group of really amazing women around me, all working hard and killing their own businesses. Seeing their achievements, enjoying their success and getting to work (and play) alongside them is really inspiring!
What are some encouraging words of advice you would give to women who wish to start a business?
Girl, yes you can!!!!! I seriously have so many prints that could and should encourage you, even if it's just for fun, it's worth it!
