Welcome to Trayde's Brand Spotlight series, where we take the time to appreciate the wonderful members of our platform. We have created this section to share inspiring stories on brands, their products and the meaningful purpose behind them.
Today, we are highlighting one of our members, Jaclyn - founder of olive & fig candles co - an independent brand providing botanically inspired soy candles and wax melts which has been ethically produced and hand-poured in Essex.
Jaclyn started her business out of a life long passion for candles and fragrance with the idea of minimising the impact on the environment. Olive & fig candle co only use plant-based soy wax blended with pure essential oils which creates a cleaner burn with less soot and a beautiful scent. All the candles are made at her home in Brentwood, Essex. With their main focus on sustainability, olive & fig co's postal packing is both compostable and from a recycled source.
How would you describe yourself and what inspired you to create your own business?
I previously had a career in fashion buying for 10 years, but I felt that I wanted to pursue a more ethical and sustainable career, and also to be my boss! I have always been obsessed with candles and must have spent a fortune on them over the years, I wanted to create an accessible and good quality candle brand.
What are some of the products you have created that are closest to your heart?
My absolute favourite is my Signature candle, the Wild Fig and Black Amber, with notes of Blackcurrant, Cedar and Musk. It’s fruity and sweet without being overpowering, with musky base notes.
Where do you sell your products and what have been some of the proudest moments for you as an entrepreneur?
I mainly sell my products through my website and virtual markets. My proudest moments are every time someone places an order, every time I do a little dance :)
How would you say the near future looks like for independent brands like yours? What are some encouraging words of advice you would give to emerging businesses currently?
I think the future looks very bright for small independent brands, COVID has jump-started a move towards local and ethical shopping. My advice would be to stay positive and keep going, even when things look like they’re not working. You’re doing a brilliant job!
